For the next edition of Farr Festival we have a weighty selection of record labels and institutions to bring the heat to Bygrave Woods. But first, here’s a taste of the initial acts joining us at Farr Festival 2018.
Taking centre stage we welcome Innervisions co-founder Dixon, Mahogani Music legend Moodymann, Running Back label founder Gerd Janson, Glasgow’s iconic DJ duo Optimo and LuckyMe family member Eclair Fifi.
Consecutively voted as Resident Advisor’s best DJ for the past four years, Dixon is without doubt the most in demand groove-slinger on the worldwide map. Heralded for his acute understanding of the dance floor, Dixon’s shown an unmatched sixth sense for capturing the vibe of a night through both carefully-built and instinctive DJ sets. From faultless track selections to micron-accurate mixing skills, his savoir-faire shall as usual do wonders and we can’t wait to see what the enchanting scenery of Bygrave Woods will inspire to the Innervisions boss.
“What up doe” - How to qualify the elusive entity that is Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann? The iconic Detroit DJ and producer has been a key figure in the house and techno scene since the early 1990s, his stage appearances rapidly turning into the stuff of legend. With no less than 11 albums and countless EPs for the likes of Planet E, Peacefrog and his own Mahogani Music and KDJ imprints under his belt, his genre-busting productions break all sense of normative restraint with gusto - hybridising jazz, funk, blues and all things soulful with synth-music and rock tropes to generate proper mind-bending leading edge classics.
Another giant in the heavyweight DJs category who’ll be joining us for the ninth edition of Farr Festival is deck wizard Gerd Janson. Former resident at institutions such as Panorama Bar and Robert Johnson, Janson is a name that puts everyone straight. Praised by both critics and public for his broad reach, fusing straight-up kicking club weaponry with more understated grooves, the Running Back honcho made a name for himself as one of the most consistent tastemakers around. A surefire bet.
Despite his long-standing presence in the game – about 20 years to this day, Mr. G still needs a bit of introduction to the uninitiated ; an injustice that Radio Slave’s Rekids helped partially repair with the ‘Retrospective’ compilation, released back in 2013. Nevertheless, the influence of Colin McBean’s music is nothing to doubt about. With a discography running past the 100 releases mark - including five studio albums, for labels such as Rekids, Defected, Running Back and his own Phoenix G. imprint, Mr. G has dispensed his groove hoodoo with unflinching consistency, discreetly but surely entering the hall of fame of UK’s electronic music.
Kings of the Glaswegian nightlife with their eponymous parties of Jamaica Street’s Sub Club that ran from 1997 to 2010, the Optimo duo - made up of legendary veteran residents JD Twitch and JG Wilkes - will curate a unique lineup "Optimo & Friends" on the Ransom Note stage, bringing along their unparalleled savoir-faire and experience spinning records from all leagues with particular focus on techno, psych rock, industrial, electro and further leftfield oddities.
Last but not least, former host over at BBC Radio 1 now jockeying at NTS, active since the sweet age of 16 through the radio waves of InterFACE FM, LuckyMe affiliate Eclair Fifi will step up centre stage to grace us with her unique and thrilling collages spanning genres as various as ghettotech, r’n’b, bass, Latin freestyle, soul and techno, sure to awaken our senses to an increasingly broader spectrum of audio flavours. Now over to our stage hosts...
For those that experienced his infectious live set of Detroit techno in 2017, we welcome back Mr G to showcase his tongue-in-cheek “G's Spot” stage. Joined by the very best of US and further afield producers, Mr G’s custom Funktion One sound system will also return to the woods.
Our long time friends Ransom Note take control of the woods for three nights, presenting a selection of local and international talents from their discography. South London’s Balamii Radio uproot from their Peckham-based studio and head to Bygrave Woods, promising to inject a wealth of budding talent to the festival. They’ll be based at their very own stage across the full four days at the festival.
Following the success of our ambient and experimental stage “Campfire Headphase”, Inverted Audio will curate an expanded programme of otherworldly electronic music, spanning the realms of ambient and downtempo via experimental and rugged techno. Rest assured the talents joining us this year are exceptional.
Inverted Audio have also invited Bristol based imprint Bokeh Versions to present Campfire Headphase on the Sunday, set to explore the outernational rhythms of dub, bass and reggae.
With a sprinkling of artists and stages partners announced, limited early birds weekend tickets are on sale now.
